Steven Smith - 1957-2008

Steven F. Smith, 50, of Ashland, passed away Monday evening, April 28, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Smith was born June 16, 1957, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Robert “Red” and Neva Stapleton Smith. He was a window treatment installer in Florida, a clerk with the Destin Paint Store in Destin, Fla., and was previously employed with AK Steel Coke Plant and CSX Railroad. Steven was a quiet and solitary man, short on words, but long on patience and slow to anger. He will be missed deeply by family and friends.

Steve sadly leaves behind his family — a brother, Robert Keith Smith and his wife, Becky, of Pickerington, Ohio; a sister, Kathy Smith Filkins of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; nieces and nephews Jonathan W. Smith of Wilmington, N.C., Robert C. Smith of Baltimore, Md., and Ashlee N. Filkins and Shane K. Filkins, both of Point Pleasant; two special friends, Sarah Ball Brandal and Dean Carrico; and a host of extended family.

A funeral service for Steve will be at noon Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Jim Mitchell.

Final rest to be beside his mom and dad at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Those wishing to pay respects to the Smith family may do so between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Steve worked with me at AK Steel for a few years. He was much more intelligent than I realized when we were in school. He had a very dry wit, and was extremely well read.

He was pretty much a loner, even as an adult. I hated to see him pass away, because I honestly thought he had a lot of undiscovered ability.
