Stephen G Kovach

Kovach, Stephen Gregory (12/4/2018)

Stephen Gregory Kovach died on December 4, 2018, at his home in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Steve was raised and attended high school in Ashland, Kentucky.  He roomed in Smith Hall freshman year and played on the freshman basketball team along with fellow Smithees Craig Enright, Channing Lushbough and Blaine McBurney. As Bob Gruendel says, “all four of them were 6'6" or bigger, so Smith Hall was an imposing place!” Steve also joined Harold Parmington Foundation. Fellow HPFer Dave Zakin says “Steve was a large, playful guy with a big heart,” and Rich Pender adds “Steve was a gentle giant and a friend to all.”

Early in our sophomore year, Steve decided to become a chiropractor and left Hanover to obtain his Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine degree. He practiced in that field for his entire career. At the time of our 25th reunion Steve was working in Mooresville, North Carolina, and later moved to Florida.

Steve is survived by his three children: Megan, Stephen and Kristen (with his first wife, Susan).  In 2016, Steve married Carol Cochran Kovach, a high school classmate.

I’m so sad to hear about Steve’s passing. He was such a good friend to me and I so wish we’d stayed in contact after high school. After becoming friends on Facebook I was hoping he might come back for our next reunion. Rest peacefully my friend 💔

Steve and I worked in the library, I think 2nd. Period, during our senior year. When there wasn’t a task in the library we sat in one of the study rooms and played chess. He usually kicked my butt, however I got better as the year progressed and we continued a game into the freshman year of college. We played a game by mail via post cards. There was no winner in that game and I lost touch with him. Have not seen or spoke to him since ’76. But it is sad to hear of his passing. Checkmate my friend!
