Greg tried his best to help coach me thru Calculus I at UK my sophomore year, but it was hopeless. None the less, he was very patient and took a genuine interest in trying to see that I got thru it. We didnt hang much in high school so I was impressed that he'd what little time he had from his swimming scholarship to help me. Greg was a great guy for what little I knew of him.

Greg was the ultimate "easy going" guy. I will always remember that smile, and his laid back personality.

In gym class, during the winter, we would jockey for position to make sure that there were three guys between Shepherd and us. That way, when we counted off for teams, you knew you'd be on his water polo team. I don't think his team ever lost a game in water polo. The guy was an absolute fish.

His son, Jake, now lives in Columbus, OH, with Greg's sister, Jane. Jake is a tremendous young man, and I know Greg would be thrilled at how well he turned out.

Greg also has two daughters that live here in Ashland (Erin and Brizia), but I'm not certain how they are doing.

I joined the swim team my freshman year, and Shepherd (what we swimmers called him), who already was a superstar swimmer, graciously helped me become part of the team. Since he, Rick Goddard and I were the only swimmers from our class, we got to be pretty close friends. We spent many hours in the pool and on the road. He was funny, tough, and very supportive of us 'lesser' talented swimmers. I last visited him sometime in the mid 90's, and he and I took up like we were still getting yelled at by Coach Weckler. I am not sure, but I don't think he ever lost an individual race in high school. I still admire his talent and recall his genuine smile. Rest easy, Shepherd, you are missed.

Although I certainly remember Greg during our high school years and his many swimming accomplishments, I mainly remember him in the '90's.His daughter, Erin, and my daughter, Megan were cheerleaders together. First for Oakview Elementary and then Verity Middle School. Erin and Megan were friends and I would frequently drive her over to the Shepherd's house. You are right,John. Greg did have a genuine smile and he is very much missed.

I knew Greg quite well from our high school days.  We spent some time together riding bikes around town, going fishing etc.  I still remember our Latin class from Putnam Jr High.  His given name was Gaullus.  Strange how we remember some things from our past.  I will always consider him to be a great friend!
