Mark Duncan Obituary

Mark Alan Duncan, age 69, of KY Hwy 173, Sandy Hook, Kentucky, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at UK St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.

Born December 6, 1956, in Greenup County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William Gordon Duncan and Alberta Louise Rucker Duncan.

Mark is survived by his loving wife Sherry Lynn Gray Duncan, whom he wed October 10, 1998, and their beloved son, William Michael Duncan, whom he adored.  As well as his five siblings:  Bill Duncan (Nancy) of Austin, Texas, Fonda Duncan Miller of Ashland, Kentucky, Mike Duncan (Elsie) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Steve Duncan (Wadonna) of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Gina Duncan Helm of Lexington, Kentucky.

Others to treasure his memory are his mother-in-law, Dorothy Fannin Smith and husband Laymond Smith; father-in-law, Zane Gray; brother-in-law, Alex Gray (Kayla), all of Morehead, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Cassie Gray Levesque (Jeremy) of Hartford, Connecticut; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and friends.

Mark graduated from Paul Blazer High School, Ashland Community College, and Sullivan University.

Mark spent his life in service to others. Family was most important to him, especially his son William.  He was present on a day-to-day basis and special events. He enjoyed being a dad in every way.

Mark also enjoyed traveling, looking at classic cars, and in his younger years, running marathons.

Service to his country was another meaningful aspect of Mark’s life. Personnelman First Class Duncan served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserve from 1986 to 2004. He served at sea aboard the U.S.S. Hepburn FF-1055 & U.S.S. O’Brien DD-975 during the Tanker and Gulf Wars, and spent his Reserve service through the ‘90s and War on Terror with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalions 24 & 20.

Mark will be remembered for his deep devotion to family, steadfast service to his country, and kind heart. He leaves behind memories that will be cherished by all who knew him. His legacy of love and service will continue through his son William, as well as the family and friends who were fortunate to know him.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mark's passing.  I knew Mark in grade school.  I think he was my first crush.  He gave me a locket for my birthday.  I still have it today.  Life is so short.

So sorry to hear of Mark's passing.  Seems as though we get these notices nearly each month.  I pray for Mark's family during this time of grief and loss.  I am so grateful and proud that Mark represented what is best in all of us and that was his love of God, family and his country.  R.I.P. my friend.
